After many months of preparations we were incredibly happy when last Friday morning, 8th of August, the day had finally arrived, and we were down at Tangana beach, setting up the event site for the first ever Butterfly Effect Event in Tarifa.
8 am at Tangana is a beautiful time to be there… peace and quiet, the sun gently coming up, and only us setting up our tents and preparing our boards. A big contrast to the huge party that we managed to get going there only a few hours later! Whilst setting up our gear, I had a little think back to why we had started doing this, and what really motivated us to see this amazing women’s event come to Tarifa.
I had first come across the Butterfly Effect several years ago in Maui, and had loved seeing these images of hundreds of women getting together to enjoy and share their passion for water and the ocean. The Butterfly Effect was founded in Maui 8 years ago by Tatiana Howard, and she has been working incredibly hard these last years to take these events and spread the Aloha across the world, including Cabarete, Lake Garda, Tahiti,Dakhla and many other locations. It’s just a good vibe, happy spirit , type of event. It’s not a competition, or anything of the sort. Just a chance for women to get to together in the ocean, surf, kite , windsurf, SUP, enjoy themselves, learn new things, share it with their friends, and share their ocean passion.
So it was a great feeling to finally be setting up the event on the day, with Tatiana Howard , the BE founder, and her boyfriend Francesco also here in Tarifa to help create this event, alongside Maria Malo, founder of brand Mala Mujer, also together working hard to make it all happen.
We were initially unsure of how many girls we would get to sign up for our BE Tarifa event, so we were so happy when ended up with over 50 butterflies signed up! Once our event site was ready to go, with our beautiful Indonesian tent from Eveni Idea , and our SUP boards were all in place… we welcomed all the girls with a great Yoga warm up sessions, from our beautiful resident yogi Sara Martin Blanco. Yoga mats were all set up on the waters edge, and the sun was up but the temperature was not too warm just yet… we had a great yoga class, enjoying the calmness that was still found on valdvaqueros beach… before the crowds arrived for the day.
Once the yoga was done and we were all feeling calm and focused, Tatiana gave everyone a briefing about the SUP excursion. For many girls this was their first time on a SUP board, so we all learn the basics, what to do and what not, a few words from our guides, the lovely guys from OZU TARIFA, and we were ready to hit the water!
A most perfect day for a SUP excursion, just a light breeze, and the ocean was a most beautiful shade of turquoise, we all went paddling together for the next hours down across Punta Paloma.
Once we were back on land , it was time for our delicious paella lunch that had been prepared by Tangana Tarifa. Together with Coronita, who were also supporting our event, we all got some chill time in the tent, accompanied by gentle live music of Mar Negra.
After lunch, Tatiana showed us all the Hula, the meaning behind it all, and we all got a chance to learn this beautiful piece of Hawaiian tradition.
For the afternoon, the beach started to fill up and the crowds started to arrive. We got ready for our afternoon activities and started with an amazing zumba class from Lisa.. so so much fun! Everyone dancing away to the beats in the middle of the beach.. Thanks Lisa for that amazing class! Followed by windsurfing clinic from Maria Jose at Tarifa Windsurfing That was great, a good chance for girls who kite a lot but had never tried windsurfing before. A great explanation on the beach, followed by a chance to give it a go in the ocean, we laughed a lot.
Tatiana and Francesco also offered the girls a good talk and explanation about strapless wave riding techniques, which was a great opportunity for the girls to sit in on, listen and learn.
By the afternoon, the coronitas were flowing, our great DJ was set up, and then joined by the live “batucada” drumming later in the afternoon. The beach was packed, everyone was dancing, and we realised what a great, fun event this had been. So many girls had come to join us, from all over the place.. Switzerland, belguim, Spain, France, so nice to see all ages together having fun and getting into this!
After a lot of work and time and effort, we had managed to create this beautiful , fun event, and thanks to all the people who really helped put effort and make this happen! It would never have been possible if it weren’t for the joint effort and support that we received from all over!
So now its over for another year… but one thing for sure, the BE Tarifa will be back for 2015, and we are certain that it will just get better and better every year! Thanks to everyone for joining us , and see you next year!
